Diagnostic Ultrasound

More than just fake doctor show props and the technician from Juno...

ULTRASOUND

Ultrasound is a machine that emits high-frequency sound waves, which can be used to either visualize structures within the body, or to heat tissues at various depths.  Ultrasound for therapeutic purposes was first discovered circa WWII, where submarines were first using sonar to detect objects in their surroundings.  However, they found that these high-intensity ultrasound waves were affecting marine life-- baking them, to be exact!  From there, they adapted the intensity and have been using this as another method of heating tissues in the rehab setting.  Diagnostic ultrasound has a variety of uses in the medical realm, from visualizing a fetus in utero to guiding needle placement for injections.  Physical therapists use diagnostic ultrasound to gain information about various tissues, and as a biofeedback tool to retrain proper muscle contraction.

Did you know? Ultrasound can be used on humans and animals alike, placed over metal implants, and can be used to treat wounds! Use the links below for more
